RFP for Local Government Education

The Colorado State Department of Education(CDE) has released the new social studies standards that places a larger emphasis on local government and the need for informed citizenship.

The new standards have presented an opportunity for local government to serve as a resource in the K-12classroom; helping our states youngest citizens understand the importance of local government.

SDA Testifies Against House Bill 10-1162

SDA Legislative Consultant, Evan Goulding, testified yesterday in front of the Business Affairs & Labor Committee in opposition of HB 1162 which involves retainage in construction contracts. The bill is sponsored by Rep. John Soper( D-Thornton) and Sen. Bob Bacon (D- Fort Collins).
 

There were many witnesses present to testify against the bill, including representatives from CCI and from the Colorado Contractors Association.

SDA Joins Colorado Water Infrastructure Network

The protection and proper management of water resources has become an increasingly important issue for the State of Colorado. SDA has recently joined together with other concerned associations, including the Colorado Contractors Association, The Colorado Environmental Coalition, Colorado Municipal League, and many others to form Colorado’s Water Infrastructure Network (WIN-CO).

Amendment 54 Ruled Unconstitutional

The Colorado State Supreme Court announced today that in a 4-1 decision, Amendment 54 was in violation of the First Amendment, and therefore should be removed from the Colorado Constitution.

Legislative Digest is now online!

The latest edition of the Special District Association Legislative Digest is now available online!

The SDA staff, along with Contract Lobbyist Evan Goulding, has been diligently advocating for special districts in front of the General Assembly. The Legislative Digest provides up- to -date information about the issues facing special districts at the Capitol and will be distributed online throughout the legislative session.

Call For Speakers- 2010 SDA Conference

It is that time of year again, when SDA issues its request for conference speaker proposals! The 2010 SDA Annual Conference will be held at the Keystone Resort and Conference Center September 22nd-24th, and SDA is looking for session topics and/or great speakers for this year’s agenda.

POOL Workshops offer great training opportunity

Last week’s SDA Liability Pool Workshops, focusing on Cyber Liability and Property and Liability provided two great days of training for SDA members. Both of the training sessions were held in the Denver Metro area, and were very well attended. The well versed speakers discussed applying risk management to everyday district hazards, when and how to conduct and investigation, managing supervisor liability, cyber liability loss prevention, what constitutes prudent protection, data breaches, and much more.

Celebrating an Important SDA Anniversary!

Chances are good that if you have contacted the SDA office, then you have had the pleasure of knowing our Manager of Membership Services, Georgia Kraemer. Georgia is celebrating her 10 year anniversary with SDA this year and the Special District Association is grateful for her years of dedication to special districts and to our members.

Before Georgia joined the SDA staff, she worked in membership services for the Northwest Metro Chamber of Commerce and owned a custom photo lab for over 20 years.

Fire Districts Receive Communications Grant

Fire districts in Grand County will be implementing digital trunked radio.

Chief Todd Holzwarth found out on Friday that the five districts collectively are receiving a regional grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, for $991,230, with a 5 percent match paid out of the multiple fire district general funds in the amount of $52,170.
